Dual Protection
Dual protection in the context of VCT, STI and FP/MCH counseling and service provision is vital but not often carried out. The Partnership is evaluating innovative counseling tools and strategies being used to promote a range of behaviors that protect against both unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The goal of this effort is to support effective communication for: (1) providing information on dual protection; (2) assessing an individual's risk for unwanted pregnancy and STD/HIV and AIDS; and (3) developing individual risk reduction plans.
In Nicaragua, a dual protection backpack kit was developed for peer promoters. The backpack contains a flipchart, brochures, videos, manual, and game designed to increase adolescent's knowledge about dual protection. The kit and accompanying materials were designed in coordination with the Nicaraguan Interagency Commission for Reproductive Health that represents more than 20 RH public and private sector organizations.
The latest national youth survey (Enjoven II) shows that efforts to promote dual protection among adolescents in Nicaragua have gained support. After three years of promoting Dual Protection among youth, 78% of adolescent girls and 50% of adolescent boys who had sex over a period of 12 months reported using condoms for both pregnancy and HIV prevention.
