HCP Associate Award for Uganda - National Sexual and Reproductive Health Communication Program by and for Youth
In 2004 HCP signed a 3-year Associate Award (AA) from USAID/Uganda to work with the youth of Uganda and a coalition of sexual and reproductive health stakeholders in a national, youth-focused, behavior and social change effort, implemented under the auspices of the HIV/AIDS Partnership of the Uganda AIDS Commission.
Under the AA, HCP assists country partners to establish a sustainable mechanism for coordinated, high-visibility, multi-channel communication by and for youth 15-24 years old called Young Empowered and Healthy (YEAH). YEAH is managed by a consortium of two Ugandan organizations – Communication for Development Foundation Uganda (CDFU) and Straight Talk Foundation – with guidance from a Technical Advisory Team (TAT) and Youth Advisory Groups. HCP has assisted the partnership to establish a financial management system that can accept and manage funds from a variety of sources, and to implement two sequential high-visibility multi-channel campaigns for young people with broad-based support and participation.
Campaigns draw on lessons learned from Ugandan and international experience to effectively create a protective environment for youth SRH, and to enable young people to adopt positive SRH behaviors. The goal is to trigger measurable behavior change among young people including: delayed sexual debut; secondary abstinence; partner reduction; increased use of ARH/SRH services; increased use of contraceptives, including condoms; delayed age of marriage; and increased completion of primary education and beyond.
The project is guided by five principles:
- Giving young people a voice
- Building a national coalition for coordinated BCC among young people
- Creating a visible youth brand
- Employing entertainment-education approaches
- Challenging gender norms
