Africa
Fostering Integration and Collaboration: Every Africa Division HCP program operates to integrate activities across health areas and facilitate collaboration between organizations and sectors. The Zinduka! radio serial drama in Tanzania and the He Ha Ho radio program in Ghana seamlessly weave together a variety of health messages grounded in the experience of a consistent character-based story line. The Nuru Mpya initiative in Tanzania sets basic standards of quality across several maternal and child health service systems. The Neighborhood Health Committees in Zambia and the Community Based Health Planning and Services program in Ghana support front-line outreach workers with comprehensive health communication support.
Not only does HCP integrate messages across the spectrum of maternal, child and reproductive health and infectious disease spectrum, but we also develop bold visions in a participatory manner that help diverse actors work together in common purpose.
Driving Programs to Scale: The urgency of Africa's health challenges does not allow the luxury of developing micro-level boutique programs. Programs must be brought to scale quickly, but successful strategies for doing so are not widely known. Each key initiative in the Nigeria program reaches over 25 million people. HCP leads the nation-wide social mobilization effort for National Immunization Days. The Quality Improvement and Recognition Initiative in Tanzania is a model for performance and quality improvement with national implications.
New Generation of AIDS Programming: Until recently, HIV and AIDS communication was focused on simply breaking the silence and disseminating basic facts. New issues that HCP is confronting in Africa include the introduction of prevention of mother-to-child transmissions (PMTCT) and voluntary counseling and testing (VCT), re-emphasizing comprehensive ABC approaches, scaling up TB programs, and rigorously assessing lessons from the Uganda experience.
Reinvigorating Child Health and Family Planning Communication Programs: In recent years, both child health and family planning programs have suffered in Africa as focus has shifted to other priorities, such as HIV. HCP will continue to concentrate on these crucial programs in the coming year.
Devolving Capacity: Every HCP program in Africa emphasizes the building of strategic health communication skills among key partners as a pillar of its strategy. |
