Partners in Action Profiles Peru's Movimiento Manuela Ramos
MMR is Leading Advocate for Rights of Peruvian Women
BALTIMORE — The Health Communication Partnership (HCP) today released a new case study in the Partners in Action series that profiles Peru 's Movimiento Manuela Ramos, an organization that advocates for gender equity for the country's women.
The case study is the second in the series highlighting HCP's Southern-based partners. The first focused on the Turkish Family Health and Planning Foundation (TAPF).
Written by former director Ana Maria Yanez with contributions from several current staff members and others, this case study examines MMR's evolution over the past 26 years as it grew from a vocal critic for women's rights to a respected advocate for women at the highest levels of government. MMR succeeded in reaching hundreds of thousands of Peruvian women by mobilizing Peru 's rural communities, involving men in reproductive health issues, and promoting gender equity.
When it was awarded the ReproSalud project by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in 1995, it grew from a 40-person operation to an organization with 250 full-time staff and an annual budget of $5 million. This case study shows how it managed rapid growth and also how it successfully faced the challenge of promoting reproductive health and women's rights in a rural setting.
HCP is a global communication initiative based at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Center for Communication Programs in partnership with the Academy for Educational Development, Save the Children, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, and Tulane University 's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. In addition to the five core partners, HCP works with leading Southern-based health communication organizations as well as global programming partners from the corporate sector, international media, academic institutions, and faith-based organizations.
