Academy for Educational Development

OUR MISSION
AED is committed to solving critical social problems in the areas of health, education, youth development and the environment in the United States and throughout the world through education, training, social marketing, policy analysis. In all our work, AED is dedicated to improving people's lives by increasing knowledge and promoting democratic and humanitarian ideals.

OUR HISTORY
AED was established as a nonprofit organization in 1961. Its founders, Alvin Eurich and Sidney Tickton, recognized the impact that high-quality research and analysis carried out by an independent organization had in promoting change in policies and programs. Over the years, we moved from U.S. higher education management into instructional technology and then education reform in both the domestic and international arenas. We branched out further to utilize mass media for health communication in developing countries and used that experience to build expertise in environmental communication, social marketing and other disciplines. Today, working throughout the United States and in 167 countries, AED draws on 40 years of experience in education, health, youth development, and the environment -- building institutions, integrating disciplines and making a difference. As Eurich and Tickton hoped, our work has indeed led to positive change, as AED:
  • Continues to promote ground-breaking solutions to such critical concerns as child survival, gender equity and girls education
  • Builds on capabilities as a recognized leader in applying communications, social marketing, and research to promote behavior change by individuals and groups
  • Shares knowledge and lessons learned through publications, training sessions, and professional and academic exchanges
  • Conducts projects, studies, and other programs funded by 50 foundations; 90 corporations, universities, and private institutions; 20 U.S. federal and state departments; and 20 multilateral agencies and national governments
